Furniture Care

Selecting the right filling for you sofa not only effects the level of comfort, but the overall look

The type of pillows and cushions one enjoys is often a very personal preference.

Each filling has a different look and feel, and there are no restrictions to the combination of these options for your cushions and pillows. Below is some info to help you sort through these filling options. If this isn’t enough to make a decision, please don’t hesitate to call us at (877) 8-VIESSO with questions and we can help determine what is best suited for you.

Firmness

Feather and Down Options

Feathers/down fillings are always softer than options without down. The more down, such as 50% down, the softer it will feel. The option of 5% down is firmer as it contains some polyester fiber mixed in.

Foam Options

These generally feel very supportive and a bit firmer than the down options. Memory foam is slightly softer feeling than natural latex and polyurethane foam.

Eco Friendly

Anything with natural latex and feathers/down would be considered one of our Green options, and preferable to synthetic materials. natural latex, while slightly more expensive, is much better for the environment and lasts longer than polyurethane foam. Down options of 25% or 50% down contain all natural, organically cleaned materials.

Style of sitting

Loungy as possible / casual

If you are looking for the loungiest sit possible, go with down on the cushions and back pillows. The higher the percentage of down, the loungier the sit.

Need back support / formal

If you have a bad back or are looking for as much support as possible, go with foam cushions and foam back pillows. Stay away from soft options or anything with very high down percentages.

Appearance

Cleanest look with sharpest lines

The polyurethane and latex foam options are the best for keeping the cleanest, sharpest lines possible. Memory foam is almost as good for this because after you sit on it the “memory” takes hold and it goes back to the original shape. For pillows, foam is the best as well (though not very soft). Polyester fiber holds a more uniform shape and creates a cleaner look than down pillows.

Cleanest look with sharpest lines

If you want something that will keep clean lines but is still comfy for long term sitting, try the combination of foam cushions and down only in the back pillows.

Softer look

Any filling containing feathers and down will create a “softer” look, with round edges and more unevenness on the surface. It can make the filling look more inviting to sit on, even while the frame of the furniture maintains its hard edges.
